Poor Referee Decision Costs Moles Victory!
After the very disappointing defeat earlier in the week to Sheerwater, Molesey Reserves went out with a much improved performance in a very tough game against high flying Thamesmead Town.
The game started fairly even with both sides coming close in the first half. Molesey's Will Marlowe had two very similar opportunities, getting possession of the ball, taking a touch inside and curling his two shots just wide of either post.
Thamesmead had their own opportunities and Dan Hatton had to be alert to make two very good saves in the first half. The first was a shot from outside the area, which looked to be creeping inside the post, but Hatton's full stretch fingertip save kept the scores level. Thamesmead came close again when a corner was delivered and bit of a scramble ensued, with Hatton reacting well twice to keep the ball out of his goal.
Both sides continued to have their own share of possession and were both giving a good account of themselves. Molesey defence in particular were having a very good game.

The Moles were forced into a change at the break as Joe Yeates had to be withdrawn with a recurrence of his knee injury suffered against Chichester City. Molesey brought on Kimmar Edmond as his replacement. Molesey started the quickest in the second half and found themselves in the lead very quickly.
Thamesmead had surged forward, but lost possession. Conar Harrison looked up and quickly sent a ball over the top of the high Thamesmead defence. Will Marlowe seized the opportunity and collected the ball free of the defence. He carried the ball all the way to the Thamesmead area, evading the pursuing defenders and delicately chipping the ball over the retreating goalkeeper. 1-0 Molesey.
The game carried on as an even affair with both sides playing some good football and trying their hardest to create opportunities.
Michael Riggon came close to extending the lead, but shot at the goalkeeper. Will Marlowe almost grabbed another as for the third time in the game he cut inside and tried to curl the ball at goal. This time the goalkeeper pushed the ball over the bar.
Molesey's backline of Conar Harrison, Sean Hindle, Charlie Matthias and Kimmar Edmond were playing really well, restricting Thamesmead from clear cut opportunities.
Sean Hindle showed some brilliant fighting spirit when a Thamesmead striker found his way free of the Molesey defence and carried the ball into the area. Hindle came all the way over from left back and made a brilliant last ditch tackle to keep the Moles their lead.
Molesey were then forced into a change with Hindle picking up a calf injury shortly afterwards and being replaced with Ezra Nelson. This meant Molesey shuffled their defence, with Conar Harrison moving over to left back and captain Sam Galliers moving to right back from centre midfield. Rishy Vasishta moved back inside to centre midfield and Nelson took up the right wing position. Molesey also brought on Wes Lennon for Clint William.
The defence was tested to the extreme for the last fifteen minutes as Thamesmead searched for the elusive equaliser. They played some very testing balls into the area and pushed Molesey back as much as they could. If ever you needed a player to step up and be counted, it was now and Dan Hatton did that. He thwarted Thames mead at every opportunity, making five or six fantastic saves, even punching the ball away on one occasion, onto his own post and back into his hands.
It looked like Thamesmead were going to have one of those days where nothing went for them and their pressure would be for nothing. That was until deep into stoppage time when a diabolical refereeing/linesman decision cost the Moles all three points. Ezra Nelson pushed up the right flank and was tripped by his marker, taking his legs away right in front of the linesman and sending him tumbling. Nothing given. Nelson got up and put pressure on the player who now had possession of the ball. Foul to Thamesmead Town? Their free kick was played forward and eventually the ball fell loose to a player in space inside the area to break Molesey hearts and finally beat Dan Hatton.
Thamesmead celebrated like they'd won the game and Molesey dropped their heads in agony.
Full time 1-1.
A very good performance from both sides and in fairness a draw was probably the fair result, but the Molesey players and management were gutted to say the least after weathering the storm to be let down by a absolute awful decision from the officials, who until then had had a fairly decent game.
